I quite like spending time alone.
I love going to the movies alone, taking long walks by myself, even treating myself to a dinner for one. I’ve always found great comfort in the opportunity to think, process, and grow, independently of anyone else.
In fact, whenever I talk to someone about my business, I am quick to tell them how much I love that it’s just me; how much I love being a solopreneur.
I have always valued that independence, and I believe I always will.
But one thing I’ve learned as I’ve grown older—and as I’ve worked for myself—is that “independence” doesn’t always have to mean going it alone.
To me, being independent means being strong, assured, self-sufficient—but it doesn’t always mean solitude.
And thank God for that.
In this first year and a half as a solopreneur—and really, in my first 30 years as a human—I’ve learned that it’s impossible for me to traverse this journey by myself. Sure, we can think, process, and grow on our own (and I hope I always am!), but I learn through others—through family, through relationships, through experiences, through books, through mentors, through community.
And how do we think, process, and grow if we’re not learning—and learning from those who know more than us—first?
That’s been one guiding philosophy as Regina, Brittany, and I have created The Independent, a beautifully-designed print publication, packed full of the brilliant insights of our community—writers and designers and photographers and branding experts and more, who have walked the path of the creative entrepreneur for a long while, and are sharing what they’ve learned with us.
These are people who have proved that making money doing the work you love is not only possible, it is so totally worth it. Especially with a community of like-minded individuals to learn from.
These are just a few reasons The Independent is different from the many other resources at your fingertips:
- It’s ad-free. That’s right—every single space in The Independent is maximized with high-quality content and gorgeous design.
- It’s evergreen. Each issue is themed (our first is, appropriately, the “Launch” issue), so the content is specific to the information you need as an independent business owner, not to a specific time of year.
- It’s actionable. Many of our articles come with checklists, worksheets, action steps and more—and we’ve done all of the printing for you :)
(Oh, and one other differentiator that this writer loves? We actually pay our contributors!)
It’s for the individual who works independently, but with the support and encouragement and life lessons of their community. If that sounds like you, and if you think this publication will truly serve you, I hope you’ll check it out—and maybe buy a copy or three :)
Because, while we may all work independently, we only learn and grow together.
